COVID-19 can cause hair loss, even in mild cases. COVID-19 can cause hair loss, even in mild cases. But the good news is that in most situations it is telogen effluvium. This is a temporary condition caused by the infection and high fever. You could notice more hair on your pillow about 3 months after the infection. You should remember to get enough sleep and eat enough good quality protein, both are vital to your hair and skin.

If you feel your condition is a little more serious and would like to discuss treatment options you can have a chat with our resident expert - Amanda

COVID -19 can cause hair loss. Simple steps can help. There has been an inundation of reports regarding hair loss. Even if you have not had COVID, the hair loss you may have noticed is most likely not just in your imagination. What is important, is to understand why your hair is falling out, because only then can you take a few simple steps to thicker hair. Hair loss is seldom simple, and most often it is a combination of factors that are at the root of it, pun intended. Let’s talk about a COVID infection first. The most straightforward reason for COVID related hair fall is a condition called telogen effluvium. Our hair is the least necessary system for our survival, it is also the area that has the most vigorous cell division and cell growth in the adult body. When under attack the body will send nutrients and oxygen to the systems that are most vital to our survival. Let's face it, your hair needs the help less than your lungs do if you are facing a serious health threat. About 3 months after any major illness you may notice hair fall because of telogen effluvium. High fevers can cause this too, and this probably has a lot to do with why we are seeing so many cases of it post COVID, even in mild cases of infection. The very good news is that it is just a temporary condition. What has happened is that the hair that has stopped growing and was preparing to go into a natural rest cycle, has fallen out. Normally it stays in the hair follicle for about 2 to 3 months and falls out slowly over some time, but with the shock of the infection this time is cut short, and you notice more hair on your pillow. Under powerful magnification, the picture looks a lot cheerier, however, because what you would typically see is a whole crop of new hair growing! The condition is just temporary and you should get it all your beautiful hair back, with little to no intervention needed. Anxiety and psychological trauma can have a similar effect. So even if you haven’t had COVID, you may be worried, and many of us are experiencing much more distress than ever before. Your body still thinks you are under attack and can react with telogen effluvium. Rest and good quality sleep is paramount. Talk to a friend or a professional if you feel that you are not coping, seeking help early is never a bad idea.Extreme shock can cause a different response, bringing about autoimmune conditions in some cases. These need to be addressed by a qualified Trichologist in conjunction with your doctor, as there are interventions that can assist. Video consultations are ongoing and it is worth addressing as soon as you can.Small things can help your hair; sleep is vital as we do not heal and regenerate without it. Nutrition is also extremely important. Did you know that a full 30% of your daily dietary protein intake is used by your hair and skin? Make very sure you are getting enough! Other leading culprits for thinning hair are Iron and Vitamin B12 deficiencies. Under stress, you should ideally up your nutrient-dense foods so that the supply of these vital nutrients can be freely available to those tiny hair follicles. Red meat is an ideal source of iron, B12 and protein with beef being the gold standard. If you're a vegan or pescatarian you should consider high-quality supplementation. You can get in touch with Amanda if you have a particular concern you would like to discuss. Effective treatments for hair loss include mesotherapy with NCTF135ha Revitalisation serum. ... See MoreSee Less
